CSP systems collect high temperature thermal energy from the sun through a system of concentrating mirrors. This energy is then used to produce electric power through a steam turbine or directly with Stirling engines connected to generators. The installation sizes range from tens to hundreds of MW. Cost per kWh is generally lower than comparably sized PV systems. Steam turbine based CSP systems offer the additional possibility of Thermal Energy Storage (TES) so that electricity can be generated during periods of cloud cover or during low or no sunlight hours.
